Pray for Mandalay
Background
In July 2023, I got the chance to visit Mandalay in Myanmar—a city that used to be the heart of royalty, now quietly telling its stories amid all the chaos. This photography exhibition is my way of looking back on that trip and sending some blessings to the place, especially now, with the big earthquake hitting Myanmar.
It makes me feel heavy-hearted, and I really hope the civil war there can end soon so the people can finally live happily again. When I was in Mandalay, I walked along the Irrawaddy River, watching the sunset turn the water red, with fishing boats gliding by—so peaceful, like a painting. The wooden shadow of U Bein Bridge reflected on the water, monks passing by barefoot, it felt like time just stopped. I snapped photos of the pagodas on Mandalay Hill; at dusk, the sound of bells and chanting mixed together, giving me such a calm feeling. The markets were buzzing—laughter from tea shops, vendors calling out, and the smell of spices everywhere—it was so lively. Back in 2023, Mandalay had its struggles, but you could still feel its warmth and toughness.
These photos aren’t just memories; they’re a record of the resilience of Mandalay’s people. Now, with the earthquake and the ongoing war, I hope this exhibition lets everyone see the beauty and soul of this city and care a bit more about its people. Every shot is a footprint from my time there and a wish for the future—hoping Mandalay can bounce back from disaster, that the war ends soon, and that people there can live with peace and joy. Thanks for coming to this exhibition—let’s send some good vibes to Mandalay together!
